Which facts are hard, and what to do about them
Almost every child who says they cannot do multiplication can do most of it. Press on where it breaks down and it is usually the same small set: 6 x 7, 7 x 8, 6 x 8, 7 x 9, 8 x 9, and the squares 6 x 6, 7 x 7 and 8 x 8. Those have no pattern to fall back on, which is exactly why they are the ones left over.
Naming that is worth doing out loud. A child working through a deck of 144 believes the problem is enormous. A child who knows that the rules and the pairs have already removed most of it, and that what is left is about a dozen stubborn facts, is facing something finishable.
Commutativity is the highest-value idea here, and it needs to be shown rather than stated. Four rows of six and six rows of four are the same rectangle turned on its side. Once a child sees why the answer cannot change, every fact learned pays for a second one, which is why each card gives its commutative pair.
Fact families link multiplication to division and should be learned together. From 6 x 7 = 42 come 7 x 6 = 42, 42 divided by 6 = 7, and 42 divided by 7 = 6. Treating those as one piece of knowledge rather than four means division stops being a separate subject to learn from scratch.
