Going for a holiday Essential Vietnamese Travel Phrases Master Vietnamese Vowels Travel cards are whole sentences you can say on day one. Loose vocabulary will not get you a taxi.
Staying one to six months Practical Vietnamese for Extended Stay Learn Vietnamese Fast Past the tourist script you need markets, landlords, and repairs, none of which a travel set covers.
Living there, or married in Conversational Vietnamese for Expats and Family Learn Vietnamese Fast Family Vietnamese runs on kinship pronouns, and picking the wrong one is the mistake people notice.
Building a base from zero Learn Vietnamese Fast Vietnamese Positions and Actions The 200 highest-frequency words carry most ordinary conversation before a specialised set earns its place.
Teaching a child First 100 Vietnamese Words for Kids First 200 Words, then Animals, Colors, Fruits and Vegetables The themed sets are short enough to finish, and finishing is what keeps a young learner going.
Already being misunderstood Master Vietnamese Vowels any set above Vietnamese has eleven vowels and six tones. A word said on the wrong tone is a different word, not an accent.

What actually makes Vietnamese hard

The grammar is a relief. No verb conjugation, no tenses to memorise, no plurals, no gendered nouns. A Vietnamese sentence is largely words in the right order, and a beginner can build one on the first day.

The difficulty is almost entirely in the sound. Six tones in the northern dialect and eleven distinct vowels mean that ma, má, mà, mả, mã and mạ are six unrelated words separated only by tone. Reading them off a page teaches you very little, because the difference does not live in the spelling an English speaker is trained to hear.

That is why audio carries more weight here than in most languages. Every card is voiced, so you hear the tone contour rather than infer it from a diacritic, and you can copy it before a wrong habit sets.

Pronouns are the other thing to expect. Vietnamese chooses the words for I and you from the relationship and relative age between the speakers, so em, anh, chị, cô and chú all stand where English uses one word. Getting it right warms people to you immediately. Getting it wrong reads as rude rather than foreign, which is why the family and conversational sets spend real time on it.
